I always have a great deal of trouble writing arguments--or rather, I have a great deal of trouble ENDING them. It always feels like I need to make the conclusion ironclad, to step out every possible detail and potential objection any character could have. In practice, what actually matters isn't so much the words the characters say as the emotions underneath them, but while drafting, it's hard to shake the fear that I'm going to completely lose the audience if the scene isn't Logically Correct.

It's an instinct fundamentally based on fear, similar to that I've-Been-On-Twitter-Too-Long style of writing where you preemptively write out counter-arguments to every potential bad faith response you could get. I think I've gotten a bit better at walking it back over the years, but it still hits me whenever two very opinionated characters are in the same room together. It's the reason I am still not done with the epilogue story for Volume 3 that I was meant to finish over the Thanksgiving break--God willing, I'll be able to wrap it up this upcoming week. We're really down to the wire, now!
